After School Homework Tutorial
Program Coordinator: Mrs. Louise B. Adams
“It takes a village to raise a child but it takes a community to educate one.”
Our After School Tutorial Program is offered to students in grades kindergarten through high school in the Newton County School System. After school activities are provided Monday through Fridays from 3:30pm to 6:00pm.
Our main focus:
- Create a supportive learning environment which will be especially sensitive to the at-risk students.
- Improve grades and performance on the Georgia CRCT in Mathematics, Reading, and Language Arts.
- Develop in students a sense of responsibility, appropriate behavior, ad work habits that contribute to their academic success.
- Provide families with support services to improve community literacy and assist them in supporting their children’s educational endeavors.
Parent Engagement
Parents every day are faced with many challenges that prevent them from being actively engaged in their child’s education. Work schedule, family crisis, lack of education, and transportation, all are barriers to their involvement. Just as research provides evidence that parent involvement increases student achievement and success in schools, the same is shown for parental involvement in after-school programs. As a part of the Washington Street Community Center’s Academic Program in partnership with the Newton County School System, multiple strategies will be used to increase parental involvement.
Parent Involvment Activities:
We engage our parents with workshops and many family oriented activities.
These activities include, but aren’t limited to, movie nights, bike fests, outdoor fun days, field trips, workshops and seminars. Parents are strongly encouarged to attend meetings to receive regular updates and progress reports concerning their students.
